In most languages is red considered somewhat bad “seeing red”, “red as blood” and it is because we have evolved to think of red as something to avoid, something harmful.
The green color do I think is selected because it had to be a color that did not normally occur in the traffic, and the yellow was already chosen as a be aware color.
