The molecules in rubber are like springs. Picture a Slinky. Every 5 year old knows what one of those looks like, right?

Cold Shrinks and Heat Expands

When it’s hot, the slinky is stretched out and is really wiggly. When it’s cold, the slinky is compressed and is not very wiggly.
