Why does saliva become sticky during exercise?

When working out normally it would be dehydration that causes thick and or sticky saliva.

Hopefully someone else will chime in with why the dehydration does this. All I could find was what causes dehydration not why dehydration causes your question.

Edit: after pondering for a little bit the closest thing I could think of is when you’re dehydrated you are producing less saliva. when this happens the little bit of saliva that is there gets mixed with dust that you are breathing in, bacteria in your mouth, skin cells and so forth; therefore creating a glue-like substance.

It would be like putting flour into water but just enough that the water and flour mix to become pasty.
