Why does screen time negatively affect communication skills in children?

Wouldn’t watching more content with spoken words make you better at speaking? Same with captions and reading/writing.

It can help them learn words, but it’s passive consumption. It’s hearing words, not speaking the words yourself. But the general lack of interpersonal interactions stunts their social skills. They’re simply not practicing them if they’re not communicating with other people.
