Fun fact! All the elements in the first column of the periodic table react violently with water. As you go down the column the more violent the reaction.

When sodium reacts with water, it releases hydrogen and a lot of heat. It releases enough heat that the hydrogen reacts with oxygen in the air. This reaction produces more water and more heat which makes the reactions speed up causing an explosion.
