why does stereo audio sound like it’s in the middle of your head?

speaker location, shape size, output etc are all designed to create have the best sounds in the epicenter. Typically, to get the same sound in your home using two speakers, imagine an equilateral triangle. If the speakers are 6ft apart, then you should sit in the middle of them about 6ft back and at the same level as the speakers. This way, your ears are listening at an equa-distance so it sounds as if its in your head….now if you have extra channels (ie, surround sound), with speakers placed front, back, center, then the sound will give you more depth like in nature….The car manufactures will “tune” the car to make sure the drive has the best experience.

It doesn’t.

Your perception of distance from your head and direction come from slight differences in timing, volume, and frequency.

Are you talking about when using headphones?

Maybe edit your question as the two current answers are referring to speakers
