In addition to the comment above, when falling asleep your body sometimes gets worried you’re actually dying instead of falling asleep. So it sends a signal through your body to jerk awake, just to check you’re still alive

As far as I’ve seen, it’s a weird holdover from our evolutionary ancestors that slept in trees. It stands to reason that it would be beneficial to become alert if you have a sensation of falling while about to sleep. Although I really can’t explain why we get the sensation while perfectly stationary on a bed, but I’m not sure that has been explained by anyone.
