Why does the C-130 military transport plane use propellers instead of jet engines?

Ok, so the C130 has Jet engines, it’s just a different type (turbo prop). Which provides greater trust to lift ratio for the mission profile of the airplane. For example the short runway landings, and take offs.
Its meant to land on unprepared surfaces for intratheater airlift. High bypass turbine engines also can do that but they degrade a lot faster and need to changed out much sooner.
