Why does the color red become so much darker when submerged in water?

Whenever I see a pool light or something turn red, the water not only is not lit up but actually appears darker than it does with no light at all. Here’s [another example.](https://www.reddit.com/r/oddlysatisfying/comments/bszpdw/how_the_colour_changes_with_depth/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app) Why does this happen?

*(disclaimer: that’s my first post here, and it’s more like ELI13, but I’ll try my best)*

remember that **color** is actually what is **reflected**: if the object is red, it means that red is reflected and everything else is absorved (white being reflection of all colors, and black being absorption of all colors)

since red is absorbed by water, no ‘red light’ reaches the object, making it look like it’s black (because all other colors are absorbed by the red object)
