Why does the sink’s drain pipe bend upwards before entering the wall?

It’s to trap water in the pipe so that way gasses from sewage or other nasty things don’t creep their way up into your house, iirc

you mean the bend at the bottom? the trap.. keeps a little water in there to keep bad odors and gasses from coming back up the pipe.

it exists in practically every fixture in a house, the toilet has one designed into it, theres one under your shower or bath tub , basically anything with a drain.
also those gases are dangerous. poisonous and flammable.
Rotting food and water in the pipes produce stinky gas.
To stop this, we bend a pipe so that it holds/traps water. The water trapped there blocks the stinky gas floating out of your sink hole.
