It’s to trap water in the pipe so that way gasses from sewage or other nasty things don’t creep their way up into your house, iirc

Often referred to as S-traps or P-traps depending on the shape

Correct me if I’m wrong

It’s called a trap and keeps a portion of water in the bottom of the trap thanks to gravity. This keeps us from having to smell stinky odors that can sometimes exist in drain lines.

you mean the bend at the bottom? the trap.. keeps a little water in there to keep bad odors and gasses from coming back up the pipe.

It called a trap, it keeps sewer gas from backing up into your house. There also one under your bathtub, your washing machine drain, and it’s one of the reasons why your toilet bowl has water in it.

it’s called a ‘p trap’ and it uses water it traps to keep septic/sewer gases from going out of the pipe into your home.

it exists in practically every fixture in a house, the toilet has one designed into it, theres one under your shower or bath tub , basically anything with a drain.

also those gases are dangerous. poisonous and flammable.

Rotting food and water in the pipes produce stinky gas.

To stop this, we bend a pipe so that it holds/traps water. The water trapped there blocks the stinky gas floating out of your sink hole.
