I was in the shower this weekend with my son (aged 4) after swimming and he awkwardly asked me why mine is darker (than my skin). I had no answer for him. So can anyone answer this for my son who is actually 4.

I’ve always wondered why my skin is darker. I wash it a lot with tons of soap, shower gel and it gets more attention than any other part of my body. And I have a healthy regiment of applying moisturizer to it almost on a daily basis. It’s 99.44% pure white cream.
I see very scientific answers here, but I was once told that the color is the same when it’s erect, so when it isn’t, the skin is more densly packed together and looks darker.
