Why does the sky turn green with weather that is likely to spawn a tornado?

Title is self explanatory. My fiancée and I were driving through Iowa earlier this week and came across a severe thunderstorm near Des Moines. It spawned a tornado just south of I-80. Where we were, it was torrential downpour and all around us was the eerie green color. What causes this?

The sky turns green during severe weather because of how the sunlight interacts with the storm clouds.
