Why does the sky turn green with weather that is likely to spawn a tornado?

Title is self explanatory. My fiancée and I were driving through Iowa earlier this week and came across a severe thunderstorm near Des Moines. It spawned a tornado just south of I-80. Where we were, it was torrential downpour and all around us was the eerie green color. What causes this?

ive heard before from a college prof that the green sky happens because the setting sun’s light gets scattered by the storm, and when it mixes with the rain, it can make the sky look green. this color can indicate a severe storm, sometimes linked with tornadoes
