The sun’s light is scattered by particles in the air. Smaller particles scatter shorter wavelengths like blue light. During a clear day, there are fewer large particles; nitrogen gas scatters the blue light so we see the sky as blue. After a windy day, there are larger dust particles in the air which causes red light to be scattered.
