Have you ever gone to the movies and had a kid crying or someone talking through the entire film? You’re distracted and miss details, or just flat out don’t hear what the actor said because of the talking/crying. You lose bits and pieces of the whole story the film is trying to create and draw you into. Music works in a similar way. When it’s too quiet you miss subtler aspects that compliment and enhance the main/louder aspects like vocals or recurring melodies.

Loud sounds cause damage to ear, the body evolved to have a hostile response.
Quieter music requires concentrating to hear and listen, stop moving, slow your breathing etc, causes you to relax
