As a kid, the first time you experience something, it’s new and exciting and you live in the moment and soak it all in like a sponge, and you notice everything you can about it. As you get older the new experiences happen less and less and the brain just glazes over because you’ve already been there done that, so that time goes by without you paying much attention to it. The brain kinda goes into auto pilot and you don’t experience each moment as vividly as you did the first time. Like how when you put your hand under the water in the sink when it’s warm, you notice it at first but as your body adjusts to it, you stop noticing the temperature difference (unless it’s really hot). The brain needs something to change for you to pay attention to it and the water stops providing that difference once you get into equilibrium with it.
