Windex has several chemicals in it that dissolve dirt. One is Lauramine oxide , and another is 2-hexoxyethanol. However, the reason it cleans without streaks is because it also contains ammonium hydroxide, which is simply ammonia gas dissolved in water. The ammonia wants to turn back into a gas (like soda pop going flat… when the CO2 leaves). This action helps the evaporation of the Windex solution much faster than plain water, so you then have a “streak free” surface.
