So, basically, the gut shares hundreds-of-millions of neurons and one of the largest nerves in the body (Vagus) with the brain. Signals can go both ways, so a disturbance in your stomach (say from bad food) can cause a neurological reaction, just as something like depression or anger can cause an upset stomach. It even happens in stressed out wild animals.
