I tried to produce an explanation for my kid who, incidentally is 5, but I couldn’t come up with anything that I could really explain in a way that he could understand.

It’s a spring that goes boioioioioing. The reason springs do that is because metal only likes to sit in one way and if you bend it too far it will go back to how it was. But sometimes, like in springs, the metal is a little too exited and goes back and forth (move the doorstop slowly by hand to explain the movement) until it finally goes back to how it was
