Not enough demand, and the market for lower cost products is still evolving pretty quickly compared to the lifespan of a car, so there’s a chance it would be replaced at some point during the car’s life anyway

Because not enough people want it in order for car companies to include it as a default feature. Right now it is an optional feature for some makes and models.

Car manufacturers won’t install them by default unless there’s either a lot of demand for it, or the government mandates it.

The reason dash cams are so common in places like Russia is because of wide spread insurance fraud. Insurance companies mandate them.

Despite the advantages of having a dash cam in an accident many people don’t want one as the footage could be used against you.

Same reason police object to body cams.

People want to have control over what is recorded.

They don’t want videos of them going on racist rants, breaking laws, or having sex in their vehicles getting onto the internet because the car has some kind of auto upload feature connected to a integrated dash cam.

There is also concerns such a thing would become a requirement by auto insurance agencies.

One reason Tesla is doing so well is verticals integration.

All other car makers have a hodgepodge of components slapped together by the lowest bidder to make a car. Most don’t use the same language, and have to be controlled by physical buttons, and by controlling the power supply. Also the power is a 12 volt battery, reducing the ability to have too many systems. Tesla uses a 48 volt battery as its low voltage battery.

Adding a dash cam to any car besides Tesla, and maybe Rivian, creates a logistics nightmare that no one wants to deal with.

Insurance liability.

If you have a recording of you hitting someone, then that video could be possessed as evidence by the police.

You end up with a native black box that could potentially put your own customers behind bars in prison.

I saw a car recently that had a USB-C up by the mirror for a third party camera. And at least a couple of vendors like Audi and BMW have a retrofit option.

Also if you go on AliExpress you can often find a camera that replaces the rear view trim and picks up the power from a nearby connection.

Just make a decent bracket and put the wiring in to ports on the dash. Electronics provided by car companies always sux and becomes obsolete too fast.

Yup should be in place and secure and alarm the bottom of the car to protect the catalytic converter.

Common sense shit but we living in a upside down world.

“Every car needs to come standard with _______” is quickly followed by “why does every car cost $30k! It’s just a base model!”
