The A-B repeat function was only available for mediums that had two sides, A and B. This includes vinyl records and compact cassettes. In order to fit on the medium the album was spread out over these two sides. If you wanted to listed to the entire album you had to manually turn it around when it was done playing the A side so that it could play the B side. Some players had the option to play in reverse and to automatically reverse when it got to the end of a side. So you no longer had to flip the medium around but could listen to the entire album uninterrupted, but A and B side. You could then set the player to repeat the album so you got a constant stream of music repeating every 90 minutes or so. Some albums was even made to be listened to in this way.
For mediums which did not have two sides there was no such option. This includes 8-tracks and CDs. You could still repeat an album which provided the same function but since there was no A-B side it was not labeled “A-B repeat” but just “repeat”. Modern playback apps usually play from memory or stream the music. So there is no A-B side to them either. But they still tend to include the option to repeat the album/playlist which provides the same listening experience.
