Why ice baths instead of hot baths for runners?

I know the benefits and uses of heat and cold, but isn’t heat more effective at relieving tension and soreness? So why ice baths and not super hot baths?

The science is still unclear on whether it helps, but the rationale is that exercising is essentially controlled muscle damage. Ice, much like on a bruise, will prevent swelling and help with recovery after a workout. Especially for those who. Workout very hard and regularly.
