The ci driver reads prepared notes which tell rhe driver the speed. gear and line of approach and exit from corners, allowing them to drive fast blindly. The mutual trust is intense.

The co driver also manages the schedule, and the service crew, planning fuel, tyre types, etc for each segment.

For road rallies you may be doing it off a map on avroute which is not adverised in advance, at slightly lower speeds where the “road reading” from thenmap helps the driver to perceive corners and hazards. Fir safety, road rallies are usually in the dead of night.
