The navigator is doing most of the work, the driver just drives.

So the nav looks after the timecards (bits of paper that are used for timing – duetimes, etc as everyone is goven a set time to drive betwen stages.
Making sure they are in the right place at the right time (leaving service etc)

The crew will go out and perform “recce” before the event, two passes over the stages to write pacenotes, descriptions of the road, turns, bumps, water crossings etc. this is read out and gives the driver a mental picture of what the road is doing, so they candrive flat out and get the car setup at the right speed and pointing the right way for the next corner, even if they cant see whats coming up.

When the race is basically going offroading at mach Jesus, you don’t normally get to see your route, it’s purely reacting to what is directly in front of you and going off the copilots notes.

Rally is the best for that reason.

there’s an old quote from a rally driver: an f1 driver sees the same corner 1000 times. a rally driver sees 1000 corners once.

in formula 1, nascar, australian V8 supercars, btcc etc. the drivers know the tracks, they get practice laps, corners are marked and often visible. in rally, you dont get any of that. most of the courses are public roads, and the routes change every year. then there’s the fact that they’re doing 100km/h+ on roads that usually have a speed 65 max.

Why can’t someone do the same job of the passenger but over the phone?

I don’t race, but I find the driving part of driving much easier when I have navigation open on my phone and don’t need to think too much about the next turn. Especially when there are a lot of other cars moving around that I need to be aware of.

I imagine racing is even harder than driving 100 straight miles along the Jersey Turnpike when everyone around you is going 80.
