They don’t really see that well. Usually when you try to swat one they aren’t moving because they see you, it’s because they feel you. They have tiny little hairs all over their bodies that can feel incredibly tiny movements of the air around them. You moving your hand or whatever toward them moves the air. They feel that, and fly away.

With the window in the way, you aren’t moving the air around them so they are oblivious.
