What happens in those 2 minutes? You brush your teeth. It’s just a way to make sure you’re doing it long enough to hit every spot multiple times. If someone brushed for only 4 seconds then obviously they missed some spots. It’s hard to miss stuff for 2 whole minutes.

It’s a convenient way to spend 30 seconds on each ‘quadrant’ of your teeth. Inside top/outside top/inside bottom/outside bottom. Most sonicare toothbrush will give you an audible beep or some haptic feedback after each 30 seconds and then shut off after two minutes.

There is a chemical reaction that occurs between the fluoride in your toothpaste and the calcium in your teeth. The reaction is somewhat slow, and it takes time for it to occur to a worthwhile extent. Brushing for a sustained period makes sure the fluoride has a chance to do its job instead of just being rinsed out right away.
