Was talking to some friends about pursuing a PhD and some got turned off after learning it is 6 years because they say it would be exchanging the best years of your working life for someone that may not even guarantee a job you want

It depends on your field. In mine 4 is common, 5 is likely, and 6 means you’re taking too long (including the 1-2 years it takes to get your MS).
I took 6 years and was the last of my class to finish. Got lonely at the end when students I had TAed were finishing before me, haha.
