Hello, everyone! I’ve been doing some research into computer hardware lately, and one thing that I keep coming across is this idea that the speed of a processor, while important, isn’t the only thing that affects a computer’s overall performance. I’m having a bit of a hard time wrapping my head around this because I always thought that a faster processor meant a faster computer. Can anyone explain why this isn’t necessarily the case? I’m really interested to learn more about this!

Imagine you have three track athletes:
– “A” can run 10 laps in 5 minutes
– “B” can run 5 laps in 5 minutes
– “C” can run 4 laps in 5 minutes
One would imagine “A” is a better athlete because he runs more laps in the same time, but what if I told you this:
– “B” ‘s track is 4 times longer than the others
– “C” always runs at the same speed, but he can run with a 50kg backpack on without getting slower
Now you’ll realize that while “A” makes more laps, the overall work he can do is less because it’s a shorter track and he can’t carry as much weight.
It’s the same with processors. Some have a higher frequency but less computing power.
