Why is an actor ‘in’ a movie but ‘on’ a show?

Not sure that’s universal. Growing up in the UK, I would say someone is “on TV” or “on the news” (meaning the TV news), but “in a show” (specific TV show) or “in the news” (meaning print news or mixed TV/print). Also, someone commented on theatres, so I’d contrast being “on broadway” (NY) vs “in the west end” (London) vs “on (the) stage” (both).
