– Why is ASML’s technology so difficult to remake?

1.36K views

One would expect that reverse engineering technologies wouldn’t be impossible.

The importance of these technologies for China is huge.

Moreover, they have a massive budget and probably also own a couple of ASML’s euv lithography machines.

Why is it that they cant remake these machines?

I heard some sources say that it might take them a decade.

It’s like stealing recipes from a world-class chef.

You’ve got the recipe now, but you still need world-class cooking skills to make the dish.

And even if you do have your own world-class chef, where are you going to get that particular wine that’s used in the sauce?

That’s from a world-class vintner in the same town as the chef you stole the recipe from.

So now you need to steal his grapes, too. And a world-class vintner to grow them. But nobody even grows grapes round here.

And then there’s the organic, unpasteurised cheese from the locally-raised goats.

Oh, and it’s cooked in custom-made pots in a specialised oven (fired by peat from local moors, natch).

What ASML does is *incredibly* complex. Even if you’ve stolen their cookbook, you still need to develop the world-class technical skills to use it, and all the other cutting-edge supporting technologies.
