I understand why i can get green dots for some time after looking into the sun etc. but why are lasers or welding able to ruin my sight forever?

Think of your body as hardware. If you damage a camera with infrared radiation (light heat) it’s gonna be unable to recieve a signal to send to the harddrive (your brain).

Light heats things. You know how you can burn things with a magnifying glass and sunlight by focusing the light to a point?

Well, your eyes are designed so that whatever you’re looking at is focused to a point on your retinas, and those cells are fairly sensitive, so when they get blasted with all that heat it’s pretty much game over.

Light has energy in it. The eyes detect light with tiny cells which are sensitive to light. If you put too much light on them, you can burn them. This burn replaces a light sensing cell with a cell of scar tissue.
