Why is compression good for injuries?

You bump something and they tell you to put pressure on it. Why? If inflammation is part of your body’s healing process why do you want to interfere with that by wrapping it tight or taking anti-inflammatory meds?

This is a great question and one thing I like to educate people about as often as I can as a nurse. Most people don’t realize that pain from an injury is mostly from the swelling around the injury rather than the injury itself. So if you can keep the swelling to a minimum right away, it’s amazing how much that will minimize the entire amount of pain you will experience. Always, always, always ice something as soon as you can after an injury to help with this and if you can tolerate ibuprofen take some.
