Why Is Fully Self Driving So Hard?

Why is FSD proving to be so complicated in dynamic environments I.e. rain, low light, lack of road markings etc. is it an algorithm/computation limitation, is it sensory hardware, is it both? Or is it accomplishable, but not profitable?

Not an expert in the field but it is definitely a software problem. We humans are good at telling things apart in context– we can tell the difference between a leaf, a tumbleweed, a basketball, and a kid in basically any scenario. If the first one went across the road it could be safely ignored. The second one, maybe. The third, it would be preferable not to hit, and the last one critical. The computer would have to make that decision in an instant. While the tech is constantly improving, it’s still not reliable enough to put it on the road and have it make the right choice 100% of the time.
