Why is Germany’s main airport in Frankfurt rather than Berlin?

there is no “main airport” in any official way.
Frankfurt is simply the largest airport because it has developed as such in the last decades.
There was plenty of space to expand around it and its in a very central location both in Germany and in the EU.
that central location is also very important here as Frankfurt airport has both a large Autobahn and multiple train tracks passing by.
But overall its all a matter of where they had the space to go bigger.
