The answer from the medical community concerning basically anything that has to do with sleep is a big fat shrug.

We see some statistical correlation between people who sleep a lot and certain diseases (Heart disease, diabetes, obesity, some cognitive problems) , but the mechanisms involved are pretty much a mystery. (And confounding factors are a big problem with any definitive claim) Generally most doctors will point to whatever is *making* you sleep too much as the most problematic factor (Depression, other medical issues, or poor sleep quality).
