why is going up the stairs (or up a hill) so much more physically intensive?

I am not very fit, but I do walk a lot. However when I go up 3 flights of stairs I am out of breath. How come?

When walking sideways, you’re mainly fighting various forms of friction, which try to slow you down, as if you’re dragging a weight on a rope.

When you’re climbing stairs you’re ALSO fighting gravity which isn’t trying to just slow you, but also move you on its own, like that previous example of a weighted rope is also being pulled be a small angry man in the opposite direction.

The slope of your movement, or how much up you go per amount of sideways, determines how much of each you’re fighting.
