: Why is HPV less effective for people older than 18 years old?

“The HPV vaccine is most effective in early adolescence, but this starts to decrease by age 18. Because of this, it is unlikely to provide much benefit for cancer prevention as people get older. The ACS does not recommend HPV vaccination for persons older than age 26 years.”

Because your chances of being exposed to variants the vaccine doesn’t work increase as you are aging/sexually active. That ACS guidance is outdated, both CDC and Canadian vaccine advisory body recommend HPV vaccines at all ages – it might not be as effective, but the more people are vaccinated, the less chances of spread.

I think it has more to do with the fact that you may have already picked up HPV the older you are. If you are a virgin and 30 it probably works the same as when you are a preteen.
