First, both Hemp and Flax have traditionally shorter fibers, which makes the resulting cloth scratchier. People don’t like that.
Second, both need retting to access the fiber, meaning submerging them in water for an extended perior. This is also a *very* smelly process.
Third, Hemp had massive issues, especially in the USA, since it’s basically the same plant as Marhijuana.
Cotton, by comparison, is much easier to process.
