Why is it bad to dry fire a bow?

When you draw a bow, you load it either energy and the arms curl in.

Letting go means the the arms snap out. If they snap out too fast, they can overextend and crack.

The weight of the arrow slows down their snap back and absorbs energy. Without that arrow, they can snap back much harder.
