Why is it bad to press pimples on your face?

I’ve seen this almost everywhere, 11 out of 10 persons I’ve met have warned me against pressing pimples growing on my face. They only suggest that I wait it out.

Anytime I ask, I always get a similar response, “it’ll make it worse”

But does it make it worse? And how exactly?

In addition to the other comments, popping the pimple creates an opening in the skin which scabs over. Many people don’t leave the scabs alone, which can increase the likelihood of a scar, either as a spot or crater.

A lot of responses here ignoring how unsightly and off putting a big whitehead can be. It’s like one of the grossest things you can have on your face and not something I want to put on display in public.

It’s a fine art, after 15 years you’ll have it so down you don’t touch anything anymore. Or you just make it worse :/ obviously there are rare exceptions but it’s pretty easy to over do it.

Imagine a skin pore as an anus. The circular opening of the pore is the sphincter muscle. When you pop that pimple, you permanently enlarge that opening and even rupture it, creating a nasty scar. Multiply that by 20,000 (give or take). In the long term your face it’s going to look like a detonated minefield. The skin will heal but the craters will still be visible ( especially under overhead light i.e. daylight, night club light etc.)

I think I heard that there is an area on the face called the butterfly area, on the nose and around the eyes, where the circulation goes back to the brain without being filtered first. So, anything that could inject bacteria into the blood stream in that area is a bad idea.

If it’s on the verge of popping anyway and very light gentle pressure is enough to get it there, then it’s fine. Just wash your skin thoroughly (but gently) to make sure all bacteria is off.

But if it’s resistant to popping, using more pressure/force will indeed be damaging. You’re basically bruising your skin and, if the pimple bursts, you’ll cause more skin breakage than is necessary. Also when you pop pimples it often scabs and it’s very tempting to pick that scab, increasing the chance of scarring. It will also take longer to heal.

So TLDR: Only pop with clean hands if pimple is ready and you only need a tiny bit of pressure. If it resists, just keep it clean and apply some ice if it’s swollen/painful.

It’s called the triangle of death. An infection in that area carries a small chance of spreading to your brain!

Other people answered your question well. If you want to pop a pimple, disinfect the area, lance it with a sterile needle and then put a bandage over it.
