Why is it best for solar panels to face southwest, instead of due south?

I’ve heard this several times but it seems like due south would get maximum exposure in both morning and afternoon, what am I missing?

It’s better if they face south, some situation might make it better to make them face other directions.

People use more electricity in the afternoon, so you sacrifice total power generation for more power when you need it. If you have a large battery system then due south is better.

Usually it has more to do with electricity rates. If your area has “peak usage time” rates, you may save more *money* by having them face southwest, and thus extend your production time into the evening Even if they don’t *generate quite as much electricity* as they would facing the equator.
