When the air pressure in the environment changes, such as when traveling on an airplane, the air pressure in the middle ear may also change. This can cause the Eustachian tube, which connects the middle ear to the back of the nose and throat, to become blocked. When the Eustachian tube is blocked, it can make it difficult to swallow because the muscles in the throat and mouth that are responsible for swallowing may not be able to function properly. This can also cause a feeling of fullness or pressure in the ears.
