Air currents and velocity.

An interesting related thing I learned from a buddy of mine who’s an exterminator. It’s actually very easy to suck up flies with a vacuum hose.

If you ever have a fly problem, turn off the lights and let them accumulate at the windows. Turn on the vacuum and suck them all up. The ones that get away quickly return to the window to try and escape. The vacuum works because things going for a fly created an air current in front of them that helps to orient the fly away from the hostility. The vacuum reverses this because the airflow into the vacuum will orient the fly towards the hose sucking in the air.

I had a fly problem due to a hoarder neighbor in an apartment. I was able to vacuum up nearly a thousand flies in a matter of minutes.
