Why is it generally not recommended to burn waxed cardboard in a fireplace because of chemicals released, but companies like Enviro-log are recycled waxed cardboard and claim they burn cleaner than wood?

Well to start, just because it’s recycled wax cardboard doesn’t mean all the same chemicals on other cardboard is there.

Because cardboard and wax on their own isn’t bad to burn, cardboard is fine, and wax is what we make candles out of.

The real issue with card board is when they’re painted and/or treated with other chemicals. That’s the stuff that’s no good.

Exceeepppptttt I’ve burnt cardboard indoors to start fireplaces all my life and never had a problem. As long as your chimney is working and the space is somewhat ventilated you’re not gonna have a big build up of toxic fumes, really ideally it’ll go up the chimney if it’s working properly.
