Why is it ” I’m at work” but ” I’m in class”? Why does ” I’m in work” or “I’m at class” sound wrong grammatically?

I’ve studied multiple languages, have an undergrad degree in foreign language, and taught as well. The linguistically etymologically correct answer is: that’s just how we say it.
