why is it painful to be on your feet for extended periods of time? Is weight a big factor?

I’ve been working at McDonald’s for almost 9 months now, and any shifts longer than 4 hours, my feet start to hurt.

I am overweight, Last time I checked it was 230lbs. But I have heard of similar complaints from coworkers and people online.

Is it the case of too much of a good thing? (Being active and about)

Been working fast food for about 8 years and my feet generally do not hurt even when I’m working 8, 11, 15 hour shifts. It’s more my back and my soul

You’re meant to *walk* for extended periods, but standing in one spot causes fatigue and pressure points.

>I am overweight,

That isn’t helping at all. Take it from a guy with experience. When I lost 130 pounds, standing all day got waaaaaay easier. Even 30 pounds of weight loss made a huge difference.

most people have an excessive anterior pelvic tilt with poorly situated psoas and abdominals. Standing compounds this as your posture muscles struggle to compensate. Look into structural integration, get balanced.

Weight is a big part of it. You don’t say how overweight you are. 230 could be ok if you’re a big guy. I lost over 100 and now weigh 220 which is a comfortable weight for me and my feet and knees are much better. Watch your posture also. Keep your shoulders back, and bend your knees a little if standing in place a long time. For me it’s a lot better to move around than it is to stand in place.

It’s standing still on cement or tile etc. The ground your on at work is very stiff. Much stiffer than dirt, grass or sand.

Blood moves inside of our body and touches almost everything. Gravity has a way of making blood speed up and slow down which changes how much blood goes to other things to make them work properly. So standing in one place makes blood go down to our feet, and have a hard time getting back up into the cycle.

Don’t lock your knees and you need supported shoes. Your feet are what takes the bulk of the pressure from your body. If you want to protect your feet you need better shoes.

I am by no means overweight and standing in one spot all day hurts. While I am sure the extra weight doesn’t help it isn’t the cause. Different shoes have helped short term maybe someone can recommend something better though.

Hey, get supportive insole inserts. They’re a game changer. You’ll still hurt, but the severity isn’t nearly as bad. Changed my bartending shifts dramatically (management wouldn’t throw out mats for us.

you might have shitty feet in someway.

I have got high, rigid arches, and I used to have to work 12 hour shifts in a factory for my tuition…

I was 5 foot six and max 160 pounds at the time, so I doubt it was my weight, and I’m pretty sure it was my feet.

i’ve also heard of people having issues with their flat feet, which is literally the opposite problem of mine, lol.
