Why is it so hard to track down the debris of the large objects shot town over NA this weekend?

Looks like they’re still looking for it. But why wasn’t as easy as just having a helicopter fly out there and tracking it while it was on its way down?

In addition to what’s already been posted:

The objects were shot down from an altitude of 40.000+ feet. An object falling from that distance has a lot of time to be pushed around by air flows/jet streams/prevailing winds. It’s not going to fall straight down, no matter how big it might be.
