Why is it that sometimes you can hear through walls on one side but not on the other?

Hope that made sense but for clarification, I can hear my neighbours talking in their rooms really clear, but, even if we shout, they can’t hear us.

Maybe your neighbours are deaf. To be honest there are special materials like the glass that solar panels use. It lets light through but doesn’t let it out. Its because the top layer is reflective from the inside so light goes through the glass gets reflected from the metal below and gets reflected again from the glass. A similar thing may happen to sound, sound reflection (echo) is a different but it may work.
