Why is it that the colour red on LED tvs (likely elsewhere too) appears to be the most vivid colour in the picture? To the point of the area around it becoming blurry and almost painful for the eyes to look at?

The brightness/contrast is out of adjustment. Red tends to be the first colour to bleed when the screen intensity becomes saturated.
