Why is it that when a lot of people sing together the voice is deeper than the average tone?

Can you provide a link to an example of what you mean? As a music major in college and now a professional musician, I’m not sure I am familiar with the phenomenon you’re describing, but maybe if I could hear what you mean I could try to expain it.

It’s not like TikTok collaborations are properly balanced and mixed. Anybody can join in on those. You’re probably just not hearing the higher voices well enough.

If you listen to a professionally recorded choir who has the correct balance of parts you probably won’t perceive it the same as a TikTok.

It is called virtual pitch, or pitch residue, in psychoaccoustics.

Basically you hear/perceive the funamental frequency (base tone) when the harmonics are present, even if this base tone is not played.

There is an explanation, with demonstration, here: [https://youtu.be/7SrqAU0ddsk?t=522](https://youtu.be/7SrqAU0ddsk?t=522)
